Texas Instruments ยท TI-84 Plus CE

What Exactly Is a TI-84 Calculator, and Why Does Everyone Use It?

The Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus CE is a handheld graphing calculator that has been the standard tool in American high school and college math classrooms for over two decades. It's approved for the SAT, ACT, AP exams, IB exams, and most state standardized tests, which is why nearly every math teacher recommends it.

It goes far beyond basic arithmetic. The TI-84 can plot graphs of functions, find zeros and intersections, perform statistical regression, handle trig in degrees or radians, compute logarithms, and much more. It's essentially a pocket computer dedicated entirely to mathematics.

The problem? A brand-new TI-84 Plus CE costs around $110โ€“$130. For students already spending hundreds on textbooks and supplies, that's a significant expense. That's exactly why this free online version exists, so you get all the capability without any of the cost.

Can I Use It For...?

Students ask us these questions all the time. Here are straight answers.

QCan I use this to study for the SAT or ACT?
Yes, absolutely. This calculator is modeled after the TI-84 Plus CE, the most common SAT/ACT approved calculator. Use it to practice graphing, trig, and equation-solving so the layout feels natural on test day. Read our SAT/ACT tips guide for the best strategies.
QDoes it work for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2?
Yes. Graph linear and quadratic functions, solve systems of equations by finding intersections, work with fractions, exponents, and square roots. Everything your algebra teacher uses a TI-84 to demonstrate, this does it all.
QCan I use it for Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry?
Yes. The DEG/RAD toggle, full trig function set (sin, cos, tan), graphing of trig curves like sin(x) or 2cos(3x), and logarithm functions make it a solid tool for pre-calc and trig coursework.
QWill it help with AP Calculus homework?
Yes, for many problems. You can graph functions, identify zeros, find approximate minimums and maximums visually, and check derivatives graphically. For symbolic differentiation and integration, you'll still need a CAS tool, but for AP Calc graph analysis this works great.
QCan my teacher use this for classroom demos?
Yes, this is perfect for that. Open it on a projector or smart board. No need to buy a separate classroom display unit. Change functions and graph in real time while students watch. It's free for educators too.
QDoes it work without internet after loading?
Yes. Once the page is loaded, the calculator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. If you lose internet connection mid-session, it keeps working. You can even save the page offline for use in areas with no connectivity.
QIs it accurate enough for real math homework?
Yes. The calculations use JavaScript's native math engine which handles up to 15โ€“17 significant digits, more than enough for any high school or college math problem. Results match what a physical TI-84 would display.
QCan I graph multiple functions at once?
Yes. Switch to Graph mode and enter your function, you can visualize any equation in x. The graph canvas renders in real time with labeled axes and a grid. Try entering x^2, sin(x), or 2*x+3 to see it in action.

Quick Tips to Get the Most Out of This Calculator

Things most students don't discover until much later, now you know them from day one.

Tip 1

Always Use Parentheses for Fractions

To calculate (1+2)รท(3+4), type (1+2)/(3+4). Without parentheses, 1+2/3+4 gives the wrong answer because division runs before addition. When in doubt, add extra parentheses, they never hurt.

Tip 2

Use ANS to Chain Calculations

After getting a result, press the ANS button to use it in your next expression without retyping. For example: calculate sqrt(144), get 12, then type ANS*ฯ€ to get 12ฯ€ instantly.

Tip 3

Check Your Angle Mode Before Trig

Before calculating sin(30), check whether you need DEG or RAD. sin(30ยฐ) = 0.5, but sin(30 radians) โ‰ˆ -0.988. Wrong mode = wrong answer. The mode button is right above the screen, toggle it before every trig problem.

Tip 4

Graph Mode Needs x as the Variable

In Graph mode, always use lowercase x as your variable. Type x^2-4x+3 to graph a parabola. If you type a number instead of x, the calculator can't plot, it needs x to know what to vary.

Tip 5

Use ^ for Exponents (Not *)

To calculate 2 to the power of 8, type 2^8, not 2*8. The ^ button is in the second row of the keypad. For square roots, use sqrt( or the โˆš button.

Tip 6

Negative vs. Minus Are Different Keys

To enter negative five, use the (โˆ’) key at the bottom of the keypad, not the minus key. Typing -5 with the minus key inside an expression can cause a syntax error. The (โˆ’) key is specifically for negative numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions About This TI-84 Online Calculator

Every question we get asked, answered directly.

Yes, 100% free, no subscriptions, no accounts, no hidden fees of any kind. We built this because we believe math tools shouldn't cost $110. Open the page, start calculating. That's it.

Not a thing. The calculator runs entirely in your web browser using JavaScript, no app, no plugin, no extension required. Works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, on both desktop and mobile. Just open the page.

The physical TI-84 Plus CE ($110+) includes matrix math, a full TI-BASIC and Python programming environment, stat plot tools, and is allowed in physical exam rooms. This free online version covers every math function students use daily, trig, logarithms, scientific calculations, and graphing, at zero cost. It's the perfect substitute for homework, practice, and SAT/ACT prep.

Absolutely. The TI-84 Plus CE is the calculator on the College Board's approved list for the SAT and on the ACT's approved list. While you'll need a physical device in the actual exam room, using this online version to practice graphing, trig, and equation-solving makes the TI-84 layout feel natural before test day. Check out our TI-84 SAT/ACT tips guide for the most powerful test strategies.

Yes, fully responsive and touch-optimized. The keys are large enough to tap comfortably on a phone. Works on all modern iOS and Android browsers. Whether you're on a phone in the library or an iPad in class, it works exactly the same way.

Look at the mode buttons just above the calculator keypad. Click DEG to toggle to Radian mode (the button will change to RAD). Click again to go back to Degree. Always check your mode before running a trig calculation, it's the single most common mistake students make.

Click the GRAPH mode button above the keypad. The screen switches to graph mode with a prompt. Type your function using x as the variable, for example x^2-4, sin(x), or 2*x+1, then press ENTER. The function plots on the coordinate canvas with axes and a grid.

Yes. The calculator correctly evaluates expressions using PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction). For example, 2+3*4 returns 14, not 20. Use parentheses whenever you want a specific order: (2+3)*4 gives 20.

Completely private. The calculator runs 100% locally in your browser. We do not collect, store, log, or transmit any of your calculations or session data. When you close the tab, everything is gone. No analytics on your inputs, ever.

This calculator is suitable for: Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Statistics, AP Calculus AB/BC (graphical analysis), College Algebra, and Introductory Physics/Chemistry. For symbolic calculus (derivatives, integrals), a CAS calculator like Wolfram Alpha complements this well.

This is the Degree vs. Radian issue. sin(30ยฐ) = 0.5. But sin(30 radians) โ‰ˆ -0.988 because 30 radians is a very different angle. Check your mode: if you mean 30 degrees, make sure the calculator is in DEG mode. If you're working in radians (like in calculus), use RAD mode.

Once the page has loaded in your browser, the calculator continues to work even if you lose your internet connection, because it runs entirely in JavaScript on your device. You can also use your browser's "Save page as" feature to keep a local copy for offline use.
