The TI-84 Plus CE is approved for both the SAT Math section and the ACT Math section, and students who know how to use it strategically outperform those who treat it as a simple number-cruncher. The right calculator techniques can save you 30โ60 seconds per problem, which adds up to several extra minutes of review time by the end of the test.
This guide covers the highest-impact TI-84 strategies, organized by test section type. Practice all of these using our free online TI-84 calculator before test day.
First: Confirm Your Calculator Is Ready
Before the test, run through this checklist:
- Fresh batteries or fully charged (TI-84 CE uses a rechargeable battery).
- RAM is cleared, on test day, proctors may require this: 2ND โ MEM โ 7: Reset โ 1: All RAM โ 2: Reset.
- Mode set correctly, check that you're in DEGREE mode for most SAT/ACT trig problems (press MODE to verify).
- All stat lists are cleared if needed: STAT โ 4: ClrList โ L1, L2 โ ENTER.
Practice with your actual calculator, not just the online version, before the real exam, since you'll need the physical device in the testing room. Use our free online TI-84 to learn the interface and techniques.
Tip 1: Graph to Check Algebraic Answers
When an algebra question asks you to find where a function equals a value or two functions intersect, don't solve it purely algebraically under time pressure. Instead, graph both sides of the equation and use the intersect feature.
Example: The SAT asks you to solve xยฒ - 2x = x + 4. Enter Y1 = Xยฒ-2X and Y2 = X+4, press GRAPH, then use 2ND โ TRACE โ 5: intersect to find x = 4 and x = -1. Verify against the answer choices. Done.
Tip 2: Store Values to Avoid Re-Entry Errors
On SAT/ACT problems with messy decimals or square roots, compute the value once and store it: type the value, press STOโ, then a letter key (A through Z), and press ENTER. Now reference that letter in subsequent calculations. This eliminates transcription errors that cost points.
For example: compute โ(8) โ STOโ โ A โ ENTER, then use A in formulas like 2A + Aยฒ.
Tip 3: Use Tables to Check Plugging In
"Plugging in" is a powerful SAT strategy, you replace variables with numbers to test answer choices. The TI-84's TABLE function makes this even faster:
- Enter your function in Y1.
- Press 2ND โ GRAPH (TABLE).
- Instantly see the output for multiple x-values without pressing ENTER for each one.
This is especially powerful for checking polynomial questions where you need to verify behavior at multiple points.
Tip 4: Find Zeros Quickly for Factoring Questions
When a question asks for the roots or factors of a polynomial, graph it and use the zero finder (2ND โ TRACE โ 2: zero) to identify the x-intercepts. These are your roots. Work backwards to the factors.
For example, if the zeros are x = 2 and x = -3, the factored form is (x - 2)(x + 3). This is much faster than factoring by hand under time pressure.
Tip 5: Regression for Data/Statistics Questions
SAT and ACT data questions sometimes give you a scatter plot and ask for the line of best fit or the correlation coefficient. Use the TI-84's regression feature:
- Enter data: STAT โ 1: Edit โ put x-values in L1, y-values in L2.
- Run regression: STAT โ CALC โ 4: LinReg(ax+b) โ ENTER.
- Read off the slope (a), y-intercept (b), and rยฒ value.
Tip 6: Verify Trig Values Instantly
Don't memorize the unit circle when the calculator can verify it in one second. If a question asks for sin(30ยฐ), just type it. Make sure you're in DEGREE mode first (MODE โ Degree). This is also useful for inverse trig: find the angle whose sine is 0.5 using 2ND โ SIN (sinโปยน).
Tip 7: Use the CALC Menu to Find Minimums and Maximums
ACT optimization problems ask for the maximum or minimum of a quadratic or other function. Graph the function, then press 2ND โ TRACE โ 3: minimum (or 4: maximum) and follow the prompts. The calculator gives you the exact vertex coordinates in seconds.
Tip 8: Know When NOT to Use the Calculator
Good TI-84 users also know when the calculator slows them down. For simple arithmetic, mental math is faster. For straightforward algebra, solving by hand is quicker than navigating menus. Use the calculator for:
- Verifying answers you're unsure about.
- Problems involving graphs, intersections, or zeros.
- Statistics, regression, or large data sets.
- Complex trig, logs, or irrational numbers.
Practice Makes the Difference
The students who score highest on SAT/ACT math aren't necessarily the strongest mathematicians, they're the most efficient test-takers. Knowing your TI-84 inside and out is a genuine competitive advantage.
